About Bahrain
History
For over 4,000 years, Bahrain has been a vital commercial crossroads in the Gulf. The name Bahrain means “two seas” in Arabic, highlighting the country’s unique geographic position as an island nation. As the home of the ancient Dilmun civilization, Bahrain has long been a hub for trade, linking East and West.
By the mid-19th century, Bahrain had established itself as the Gulf’s leading trade center, attracting merchants from across the region and beyond. In 1932, Bahrain became the first Gulf state to discover oil, ushering in a transition to a modern economy. Unlike many of its neighbors, Bahrain quickly recognized the need to build a diversified economy beyond oil.
Since the 1980s, the Kingdom has emerged as the Gulf’s financial capital, with thriving industries in manufacturing, logistics, communications, professional services, and real estate. In 2002, Bahrain became a constitutional monarchy with a democratically elected parliament, marking a new era of reform and modernization.
Today, Bahrain enjoys a strong legal framework and a respected regulatory system, making it an attractive destination for business, investment, and tourism. Manama, the capital city, is a recognized cultural and tourism hub, having been named:
- Capital of Arab Culture (2012)
- Capital of Arab Tourism (2013)
- Capital of Asian Tourism (2014)
Weather
Bahrain experiences two primary seasons:
- Summer (June – September): Characterized by intense heat, with temperatures often exceeding 38°C and humidity levels reaching over 70%. If visiting during this time, air-conditioned accommodations and sun protection are essential.
- Winter (November – March): A much milder and more comfortable season, making it the ideal time for visitors, especially those traveling with children.
Geography
Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands, located off the coast of Saudi Arabia. The 25 km King Fahd Causeway provides a direct road link between the two countries. Additionally, the upcoming Friendship Causeway will connect Bahrain to Qatar, spanning over 40 km, making it the world’s longest land bridge upon completion.
The majority of Bahrain’s population resides in Manama, the capital, situated on the northern coast of the main island.
